Jagua Henna (Hengua): A Natural Alternative to Traditional Henna
Jagua henna, also known as "Hengua," is a natural and safe alternative to traditional henna. It is made from the juice of the Genipa americana fruit, a tropical plant native to the Amazon rainforest. When combined with henna powder and other ingredients, it produces a deep blue-black stain, making it perfect for temporary body art.
Jagua is NOT Black Henna!
Be cautious of products labeled as "black henna," as they often contain Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD), a chemical that can cause severe skin reactions, including blisters and scarring. Jagua, on the other hand, is completely natural and provides a dark stain without the risks associated with PPD.
How Long Does Jagua Henna Last?
Jagua stains usually last between 1 to 3 weeks, depending on skin type and aftercare.
Allergy warning
Because jagua comes from fruit, individuals with allergies to berries, kiwi, or other tropical fruits may be at higher risk of a reaction. Always perform a patch test before full application.
How to Care for Your Jagua Henna Tattoo
- Drying Time: Allow the jagua henna to dry completely for at least 1 hour.
- Once dried, it should appear flattened on the skin.
- Keep it on for an additional 2 hours before removal.
- Removing the Dried Gel:
- The dried jagua should start to peel or lift off naturally.
- Gently remove the design and rinse any residue under cold, soapy water.
- Initially, the stain may look invisible or very light—this is normal!
- Developing the Stain:
- The stain will first appear grayish and blurry.
- Within 12 to 48 hours, it will gradually darken into a deep blue-black color.
- Moisturizing:
- After washing, apply a natural oil such as coconut oil, Aquaphor, or olive oil.
- Keep the stain moisturized daily, especially before showering, to extend its longevity.
- Avoiding Fading:
- Stay away from chlorinated pools, as chlorine can quickly fade the stain.
